Olympic Lessons for Christian Guitarists

By Jean 1 Comment

SwimmerI don’t know about you, but I sure enjoyed watching the Olympics from Beijing. What an incredible opening night and how inspirational to hear the stories about these athletes.

Did you notice how often the news commentators talked about their relaxed technique? I did. Several times the newscasters talked about Michael Phelps’ relaxed swimming style. When Rebecca Soni finished swimming they mentioned her big smile and that you have to have a relaxed face to smile like that right after a swim.

Dara Torres, who has 2 personal stretchers, received comments about how relaxed she looked. Did you see The Jamaican runners? Usain Bolt breezed far ahead of the rest in the 100 and 200 meter race. Amazing! Made me think of ‘Chariots of Fire’ and Eric Little’s comment about how he knew God had made him fast and he felt God’s pleasure when he ran.

How can the Christian guitarist apply this? Focus on our goal, which is Jesus Christ, and develop an excellent guitar technique. Keep you face, shoulders and fingers relaxed as they effortlessly play the guitar. Unlike the Olympics there are no ‘best’ players. God rewards each one of us as we earnestly seek Him. ๐Ÿ˜‰

How To Practice The Guitar

By Jean 2 Comments

Christian Guitar Practice – Pray First

The exciting difference between just practicing the guitar and using it as a tool for worshipping an Awesome God is that our purpose and focus shifts.

It’s no longer just you learning to play the guitar. When you as God to help you, He can give you insights and help. You can use the guitar as a tool to worship Him. It helps to continue to ask Him for His help whenever you’re playing the instrument.

In my guitar studio there were countless times when a student was having difficulties and I just said, ‘"Help him Lord.’" They always immediately played better. Then I’d always say ‘"Thank you Lord."

The first step as a Christian musician is to pray. Try to use your practice as a time of worship. It’s a matter of where your heart is focused. It says in Scripture, if we seek Him with all of our hearts we will find Him. (For the rest of the article click the ‘More’ link below.). [Read more…]

Laminin โ€“ It Holds Us Together

By Jean 5 Comments

GiglioGod is so AWESOME. I saw this video last night and itโ€™s amazing how He glues us together with a substance that even looks like a cross. I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as I did! Itโ€™s a sermon by Louie Giglio. God loves us so much, and it worthy of all of our worship.

The video is titled ‘How Great Is Our God’. You’ll see why it’s called that as the video unfolds! Louie tries to help us get our head around how massive the universe is. Then he dials down to how wonderfully we are made. The conclusion is that God has a better plan for our lives than we could make up for ourselves. Plus, God is with us every day in every detail of our lives.

Praise and Worship

By Jean Leave a Comment

This year I’m reading through the ‘New Spirit Filled Life Bible’ translation. There are so many great versions of the Bible. I love reading all the commentaries from each one. In Psalm 99:5 it says,

“Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at His footstool-—He is holy.”

In a commentary box in this Bible translation, it points out that worship, shachah, means to bow, to stoop. The primary meaning is “to make oneself low.” What a great picture.

Was meditating on that picture of humbling ourselves before God. Worship is an attitude of reverence from our hearts.

On the next page there is a commentary box about praise, tehillah. Praise is a word that means a celebration, a lauding of someone praise worthy, the praise or exaltation of God.

Praise is celebrating and exalting God, where worship is coming before Him with a humble, bowed down spirit. Look at all the references in Scripture of falling and bowing down before God. That’s worship. Paul and Barnabas tore their clothes in Acts 14 when the people of Lystra tried to worship them.

Worship is reserved for God alone. It’s OK to praise fellow workers, pastors, and your friends. It’s good to praise God for making them too. But we are never to worship anything or anyone but God.

I love the picture that the ground is flat at the foot of the cross. Jesus alone is to be exalted above every name, every person. It even says in Scripture that every knee will bow at the Name of Jesus.
