Guitar Care & Changing Strings

By Jean

The best way to clean your fretboard is to loosen all the strings & pull them off the fretboard, to either side of the nut. Then use the finest steel wool, grade 0000, to wipe away the oil, grit & dirt that accumulates on the fingerboard and around the frets.

This and other tips on maintaining your guitar is in a new video at the web site.
It’s called ‘Nylon String Guitar Care’ by Ron Fernandez. Ron is a guitar maker and knows how to keep guitars in great condition.

Also new is a DVD I made called ‘How to String & Tune a Guitar.’ To keep the strings from slipping, you need to secure both ends of a nylon-string guitar with the weight of the string on itself. For steel strings, you need to make sure the end that goes in by the peg is bent so the ball is not at the bottom of the peg. Otherwise, the peg can come out. How to string a guitar and how to use a guitar tuner are covered in the DVD. Ron also talks about changing nylon string guitars in his video, but not steel string instruments.

The Untouchables, part 1

By Jean

I just met Solomon Darwin and his wife Amy. What they shared with us was so amazing, I wanted to tell you about it too. You see, Solomon’s Grandmother was born into the Untouchable Caste in India. The Untouchables are considered the ‘scum of the earth’ in India. They are denied an education and the opportunity for regular jobs.

One of 10 children, Subbamma was given away as a ‘child bride’ at the tender age of six. Nearing age 40, and barren, her husband’s parents kicked her out of the house.

Solomon’s grandmother was a very religious Hindu and everyday worshipped one of the 330 Million gods of Hinduism, especially the fertility gods. None helped her.

With no place to go, she went back to her parent’s home. Her father told her that she was a curse and not welcome there. Despondent, rejected, grief-ridden, she literally crawled on the sand on her way to the river to commit suicide. God had other plans for her life and had a British missionary, named Mr. Whitehouse stop her. He told her he could help.

He prayed for her in Jesus’ Name. As he prayed, she felt God’s healing. He helped her to locate her husband. Subbamma told her husband that Jesus was God and that He healed her. She said, “I’m not barren anymore!”

Jesus did heal her. Within a month she was pregnant with Solomon’s father!

The story doesn’t end here. In a couple weeks I’ll add part 2. OK, for those that want to ‘read ahead,’ her story and resulting ministries are at hope-for-people.org/say-yes-to-hope.htm

Left-hand Exercise

By Jean

Here’s an excellent exercise for your left-hand. It’s one I used a lot with my students. This is a perfect exercise to use as a ‘warm-up’ before you play songs on the guitar. Just click the image below and that will open up a new URL which contains the video.

My Jesus Tab

By Jean

‘My Jesus, I Love You’ is a song in Volume Four of our Worship Guitar Class course. Those lessons teach about bar chord families and there are lots of songs in upper positions. I was looking at ‘My Jesus, I Love Thee’ and this instrumental arrangement came into my mind. I thought, “This would be a fun arrangement to share with you.”

In the second lesson of Volume Four I’m teaching on how to make any chord into a bar chord in various families up and down the neck. This instrumental version has some new bar chords to practice. I wanted something for newer students too, so the music includes an arrangement with easier chords too. You can download the music for free below the video.
